Let’s be honest — joy can feel tricky. Some days, it’s easy to feel grateful and light. Other days, not so much. But what if joy wasn’t about how “good” the day is? What if it was about who God is? That kind of joy changes everything.
I’m speaking of a kind of joy that isn’t dependent on perfect circumstances. It doesn’t fade when life gets messy, and it doesn’t crumble under pressure. As a Christian, we learn that this joy isn’t rooted in us at all — it’s anchored in Christ.
When I was much younger, I thought joy was just an emotional high, something that came and went depending on what was happening around me. But Scripture paints a very different picture. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11). His joy isn’t fragile. It’s full, steady, and divine. And I want more of it.
How about you?
This kind of joy shows up in the quiet moments — when we choose gratitude over grumbling, trust over fear, worship over worry. It shines brightest in seasons of hardship, not because pain disappears, but because Christ remains. The Holy Spirit produces this joy in us (Galatians 5:22), reminding us that our hope is secure, even when the world shakes.
In my previous blog I wrote about speaking with Dan and seeing that Christian joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness is desirable but depends on happenings. Joy is more about being anchored. It’s the deep assurance that God is good, that He is with me, and that His promises are true. This joy sustains, strengthens, and overflows.
So today, if your heart feels weary, remember this: joy isn’t something you have to manufacture. It’s a gift— so why not ask your ‘how much more’ heavenly Father (Matt 7: 11) for a fuller release of joy today?
